Overview of the Niagara Falls AreaThe prime attraction of the Niagara Falls area is, of course, the falls themselves. However, there are numerous other attractions in the area including other scenic wonders, museums, historical sites, wineries, theater and more. The Falls are located on the border between the United States and Canada. There is an almost universal agreement that the falls are best viewed from the Canadian side. However some improvements on the American side such as the observation tower, which resembles a partially completed cantilevered bridge, and balloon ride have increased the viewing possibilities there. Getting_there | Accommodations | Currency | Cell_Phones Getting thereTravelers can reach the Falls area by air, auto, train or bus. By Air Several regional and international airports service the American and Canadian sides.
By Auto If you are driving from the United States the Interstate System will lead you to either the Rainbow Bridge or the Lewistown-Queenstown bridge. The Finger Lakes region can make an interesting stopover if you are coming from the eastern half of the US. We encountered over a two mile backup at the tolls at the end of I-90. If you have a good local map and plan ahead of time, you can take an earlier exit and avoid the congestion. There was a second tie up on the way up to the Falls at the tolls at Grand Island. However we sailed through on the return trip. If you are coming from the United States, make sure you have the appropriate travel documents for everyone traveling with you, especially children. Also, make sure that your vehicle is clear of any contraband such as a box of shotgun shells from your last duck hunting trip, knives, pepper spray etc. When you return remember that flowers, fruits, vegetables should not be brought back into the United States. Canada sells Cuban cigars but you definitely do not want to bring those across the border. Allow plenty of time at the border crossing. You never know how long the process will take. By Rail Amtrak service is available to the following cities on the Empire and/or Maple Leaf routes.
By Bus
AccommodationsThere are a wide variety of accommodations on both the American and Canadian sides ranging from luxury hotel resorts to smaller motels and bed and breakfasts. Do your research beforehand to determine the best lodgings to meet your needs.
CurrencyMost establishments on the Canadian side will take American Dollars. If you pay with a credit card the currency exchange rate will be automatically calculated. Make sure you factor in the exchange rate when making purchases. Cell PhonesMany cell phones from US providers will be on roam in Canada. However if you are on the Canadian side at the Falls area or near cell towers on the river you may be able to get non roaming coverage. We found that it was helpful to shut the phone off and turn it back on.
