Fort George dates back to the 1700’s. It was abandoned for some time
with only the powder magazine remaining which happens to be the oldest
still standing building in Niagara-on-the-Lake. During the War of 1812,
Fort George was engaged in an artillery duel with Fort Niagara on the
American Side.
If you go, be prepared to spend a couple of hours. Once you get inside
he fort you can see that there are a number of buildings spread throughout
the grounds. These are faithful reproductions of the buildings that would
have compromised the fort. In addition, there are period actors such as a
fife and drum corps and artillery demonstrations. You might want to call
before you go to determine the schedule for the day.
As you walk through the grounds you can see a good representation of
life in a British fort of the period. There is a jail and a punishment
triangle. In the center of the grounds is an officer’s quarters. If you go
further back, you will come to an authentic kitchen where they were baking
cookies. (Yes they let you sample them) Make sure you don’t miss the walk
back to the powder magazine. The construction of the building and it’s
history are quite interesting. While you are back there look for the
entrance to the tunnel to the blockhouse. This is a 100’ stone tunnel
which takes you to the basement of a small blockhouse. You can climb the
stairs to the top and see the view from the firing ports.
Summary – Well worth the trip if you love history. They staff was very
knowledgeable and friendly.
