Niagara Falls Geography
The Falls are a result of the geography and geology of the area. Originally the falls were much further to the east (downriver) . Erosion over time has resulted in their current location. Diversion of the flow for Hydroelectric generation has slowed the erosion to a small degree.
The cross section above is of the Horseshoe Falls. ( Note, the drawing is for general interest only. For a more definitive explanation of the geology, please consider a more authoritative source) The American Falls has eroded in a way that leaves huge boulders at the base so you don't have the deep water of the Horseshoe Falls. |
