Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls is one of the great natural wonders of North America. The Falls lie on the border of the United States and Canada between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. As the Niagara river flows toward Lake Ontario, the geology causes a drop of almost 180 feet at the falls. The river drops further as it goes through the Whirlpool Rapids. The long term consensus is that the falls are best viewed from the Canadian side. The falls consist of three separate falls: The American Falls, The Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. Goat Island separates the Horseshoe Falls from the American and Bridal Veil Falls. Because of the geography and changes in viewing conditions, you should try to allow a couple of days for viewing the falls. If you can, a trip to the Skylon tower or a helicopter tour will give you the best overall view of the falls.
One of the secrets to viewing the falls is to view them from as many locations as possible. Each location offers its own truly unique vantage point. The perspective when viewing the falls from the Maid of the Mist is totally different from viewing them from the Skylon Tower Table Rock or Victoria Park. Also there are subtle changes in the character of the falls depending on the time of day and weather conditions. It's almost like snowflake. You can view the falls thousands of times and never see the same thing twice. |
